This varies depending on your level of cover and is something you should discuss with your insurer.
3. What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a science based health care profession that views human movement as central to health and well being. Physiotherapy aims to restore function and movement to people who are injured or suffer from various physical conditions.
Physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat people with movement disorders and also educate on ways to avoid injuries and maintain a fit, healthy body. Initial assessment enables the identification and analysis of the client's main problems - leading to the development of the appropriate treatment and management strategies.
Physiotherapists utilise a wide range of physical techniques to assist them in patient management including joint mobilisation and manipulation, massage and soft tissue mobilisation, muscle re-education, dry needling, therapeutic exercise, and electro-physical modalities such as ultrasound, ice, heat treatment and electrical nerve stimulation. Education and lifestyle advice is also offered to help meet the health needs of different people, and, prevent a recurrence of their injury.

5. Do I need a doctor's referral to come to physiotherapy?
No, you do not need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist. Physiotherapists are 'primary contact practitioners,' which means they are trained to assess and treat your problem from scratch. If your problem can not be treated with physiotherapy you will be referred on to the appropriate health professional.
The only time you will need a referral from a doctor is if your fees are being paid by Work Cover or Department of Veteran's Affairs.
6. How long does an appointment last?
Initial appoints can last between 30 - 60 minutes. Follow up appointments will last between 20 - 40 minutes. Both these appointment times will depend on the type of condition that you present with. Longer appointment times can be arranged if required.
7. Do I need to bring my scans and x-rays?
If you have any relevant x-rays or scans please bring them along to show your physiotherapist.
8. Do Physios "Adjust" backs?
Yes. After assessing you if the physiotherapist feel that an adjustment will help your particular condition they will adjust your spine as one part of your treatment. Our physiotherapist are highly trained in adjustments and through regular inservices are continually fine tuning and updating their techniques.
9. Can I claim my physio treatment through Medicare?
Yes, but only if you are referred by your doctor through the federal government's EPC Care Plan for chronic conditions. Your doctor will indicate on your referral forms for how many sessions you can claim a medicare rebate.
10. Can the physio refer me for MRI scans or an Ultrasound?
Yes, however with ultrasounds you can claim a medicare rebate if your doctor refers you.
11. Will my health insurance cover the cost of products (eg. ankle brace) I purchase?
Some insurers are starting to allow this but you need to discuss it with your insurer.
