What does a Psychologist do?

Psychologists study how people think, feel, behave, and react. They are trained to talk to people and assist with a wide range of concerns, including work stress and performance, relationship troubles, coping with illness and health problems, emotional and mental health issues, trauma, and personal crises. There are no “magic pills” – psychologists work collaboratively with clients to help them understand and cope with their issues, and live a better life. During a session, you can expect to discuss past and current thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and explore new ways of thinking and behaving – in a confidential and safe environment. You will often be given tasks to complete and skills to practice at home, so you need to be open and willing to do some work.

Who can access Psychology Services?

It is important to note that psychological services are not exclusively for people experiencing major crises. Psychological services can be accessed at anytime and by anyone wanting to enhance their sense of wellbeing and life. You can have as many, or as little, number of sessions as you wish – it’s all a question of your specific needs and wants.

What will it cost?

You do not need a referral to consult with a psychologist, but if you have a ‘Mental Health Care Plan’ from your GP, or a referral from a psychiatrist, then you will be able to claim a Medicare rebate of $81.60 per session for a maximum of 12 sessions per calendar year. If you are not eligible for Medicare, you may use private health insurance or pay the full fee. How much you can claim back from your private health insurance will depend on which fund you are with and what level of cover you have (please contact your health fund for more information). Please note you cannot use your private health insurance ancillary cover in conjunction with Medicare rebates for psychology services.
