What is pelvic girdle pain?
Pelvic girdle pain is a common problem in pregnancy due to the hormonal effects on the ligaments, as well as the increased weight gain and postural changes putting extra pressure on the joints. Approximately 2 out of 3 pregnant women will experience a degree of pelvic girdle pain during their pregnancy. The pain is usually associated with an asymmetrical distribution of forces placed through the pelvis (ie. putting more weight through one leg vs the other).
Activities that will aggravate pain:
- Single leg stance
- Poor posture
- Walking up and down stairs
- Prolonged standing
- Long walks
- Rolling in bed from side to side
- Getting out of bed or off the couch
